My name is Donald Turek and I am the oldest of the Turek children. What an adventure my life has been . . . it's hard to believe 49 years have gone by so quickly!
In 1978, at the age of 12, I suffered burns to 63% of my body in a fire. After 28 surgeries and four years of doctors and hospitals, I was able to return to a somewhat normal life. It was a very difficult time, but with the amazing love and support of my family, we all grew stronger.
Along with my grandmother, Enola, my Father, Chuck, my brother, John, and my sister, Angie, I also have kidney disease. One year, my blood pressure started getting higher and higher. I scheduled an appointment with a nephrologist and received the results five days later. Given the family history, it was not unexpected and my kidney function has been decreasing each year. My doctor expects that I will be dialyzing within one to five years.
I am the proud father of three wonderful children . . . a son, Charlie and daughters, TeJai and Caycee. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC and work for Myrtle Beach Golfmasters to provide golf packages and vacation getaways to the Myrtle Beach area. Each year I help organize the annual Vegas Nite and golf tournament which raises money for the Foundation.
Although it would be easy to feel sorry for myself, all the struggles have made me stronger and given me a vision of how lucky I am to be alive. I am blessed with a loving family and through this Foundation, the ability to help others through their bumps in the road.
Surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget those that don’t, and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right and pray for the ones who don't. Life is too short to be anything but happy and falling down is a part of life and getting back up is living.
